Freÿr Castle and gardens

A Meuse-side residence, geometric gardens and orange trees whose history can be traced in the estate archives.

A dialogue between house, garden and rocks

On the banks of the Meuse in the municipality of Hastière, Freÿr combines a historic residence with designed gardens. The manor rebuilt in 1571 subsequently evolved into a Renaissance-style country house. Facing the rocks on the opposite bank, the façade and garden perspectives create a particularly clear encounter between architecture and landscape. The ensemble invites you to look at axes, boundaries and reflections. The château brings memories of its residents; the grounds show how space can be arranged for contemplating the valley, moving through it and creating surprises.

The orange tells the story of garden work

The estate archives record payment to a servant for moving the orange trees in 1710. This small accounting entry, presented by Freÿr, recalls something visitors easily forget: a formal garden requires skills, heavy lifting and care. It gives a place to those working behind the beauty. Looking at the orangeries and planting, ask how maintenance varies through the seasons. The anecdote is documented; it does not mean all the trees visible today are exactly the same age.

Combining the visit and the journey

Check the official Freÿr website for opening, bookings and accessible parts of both château and gardens. Road conditions or valley events may alter access: check the day's announcement. Anseremme station offers a rail arrival in the area, but the estate is not directly outside. Arrange the onward journey to the château's riverbank, taking Meuse crossings into account; check buses or pre-booked transport. Avoid inferring a shortcut from a simple map view. Plan the return and allow time to enjoy the grounds calmly.
