Waleffe Castle

A Classical residence still lived in, to discover on a pre-booked visit or an advertised opening day.

A different kind of Hesbaye château

At Les Waleffes, in the municipality of Faimes and the Waremme district, Waleffe Castle presents the architecture of a country residence rather than a fortress silhouette. Built in the early 18th century, it preserves interiors whose decoration and furniture are central to its heritage interest. The de Potesta family maintains a home that is still inhabited. This continuity gives the place a distinctive character: you discover spaces designed for entertaining and living within an estate opened by its owners under advertised arrangements. Preparation is therefore integral to the experience.

A design can travel further than its creator

The decoration is associated with the influence of Daniel Marot, whose ornamental models circulated across borders. This is an art-historical insight: published designs can shape a residence's taste without every detail implying the designer's personal presence. Heritage presentations particularly invite attention to ironwork, stucco and trompe-l'œil. Ask the guide how to distinguish a design, an artisan's interpretation and later alterations. The château becomes a place of exchanging models as much as a witness to wealth.

Booking before setting out

The château website announces events and visiting opportunities. It has documented openings in 2026, among others, but that does not mean the estate is freely accessible every day. Contact the team to confirm date, language and included spaces. Waremme station provides a possible rail arrival; the château is then at Les Waleffes, outside Waremme's centre. Organise the final stretch and return through a checked connection or pre-booked transport. Bring footwear suited to the grounds if the visit includes the park.
