Huy Collegiate Church and its treasury

A great Gothic rose window, a Romanesque crypt and centuries of Mosan metalwork beside the Meuse.

Two churches in a single view

At the foot of the fort, Notre-Dame and Saint-Domitien Collegiate Church expresses several centuries of Huy's history. The Gothic foundation stone was laid in 1311, and construction continued over a long period. Beneath the building, the crypt preserves the memory of the Romanesque church consecrated in 1066. This layering gives the visit its interest: a city does not simply replace one monument with another, but builds upon its memory. In the restored crypt, the treasury also reveals the skills of the Meuse valley's goldsmiths.

The vanished spire and the reliquaries

The tower has not always had this silhouette. In 1803, lightning caused a fire that destroyed its spire, which was never rebuilt. This documented absence explains today's outline better than an impression of an unfinished monument. The treasury preserves medieval reliquary shrines associated with Saints Domitian and Mengold, among other works. Before them, consider how an object can be a container, image and testimony to craftsmanship at once. Their presentation in a crypt adds a dialogue between architecture, light and precious metal.

A visit in the city's rhythm

Check access, services and possible closures on the collegiate church's official page. Access to the church and treasury may follow separate arrangements. Huy station allows an arrival by rail; continue towards the centre and cross the Meuse to reach parvis Théoduin de Bavière. The station is not directly in front of the monument. Extend the discovery through nearby lanes and the Bethléem portal, respecting the peace of an active place of worship.
