Saint-Vincent Collegiate Church, a thousand years of presence
A great Romanesque church whose stones and furnishings tell of centuries of life in Soignies.

The old centre in the age of the canons
Saint-Vincent Collegiate Church gives Soignies a distinctive silhouette and historical depth. The canons built this great church associated with the cult of Saint Vincent in the 11th century. Its Romanesque masses, towers and varied materials invite patient observation. The Walloon heritage service highlights sandstone and limestone, as well as a flat-ended choir preserving an old groin vault. The monument reveals the evolution of Romanesque art in Hainaut, at the heart of a town whose life was long organised by its chapter.
A church that did not stop in its first century
The surprising detail is the coexistence of periods. Inside a building famed as Romanesque are a Renaissance rood screen, Baroque stalls and furnishings; some chapels and the bell tower are Gothic. The high altar highlights Saint Vincent's relics in an upper chapel. This layering shows that a monument is not an image frozen on its construction date. Each generation used and transformed it according to needs, means and artistic forms.
A living monument, a straightforward arrival
The official City of Soignies page advertises free access and guided visits on request. Still check times and any worship-related restrictions before travelling. Enquire separately about the Chapter Museum and particular spaces: they are not automatically accessible with the church. Soignies SNCB station is the nearby station for the centre. Walk to the Grand-Place following town signs; no rural connection is necessary for this stop. Ask about the best entrance if your group has mobility needs. The official historical walk then connects the collegiate church with nearby streets and buildings.
