Durbuy, from narrow lanes to the long history of rocks
The old town brings together cobbled streets, medieval history and a spectacular fold of limestone beside the Ourthe.

A small town, several timescales
Durbuy invites you to slow down in its cobbled lanes, but its size does not tell the whole story. In 1331, a charter recognised its town status within the defensive system of the Duchy of Luxembourg. The tourist expression smallest town in the world is best understood in the light of that heritage. It is an invitation to discover an old town, not a universal measurement to be taken literally.
The old town lends itself to a walk of changing scales: a door, a façade, a narrow street, then an opening onto the Ourthe. The market hall, church surroundings and views towards the castle form a landscape best appreciated on foot. Notice where the river appears to constrain the town's shape too; the terrain has much to tell here.
The great fold rising above the houses
Durbuy's anticline offers a direct encounter with geology. Its limestone layers form a spectacular fold, readable in the landscape rather than on a diagram. The Geopark recalls its description in 1807 by Jean-Baptiste d'Omalius d'Halloy, a pioneer of modern geology. This detail encourages you to see the rock as an open-air scientific document.
A walk to plan right through to the return
Check Durbuy Tourisme for guided visits, access and the conditions of attractions you wish to add. The lanes form the heart of this discovery; nearby interiors and activities have their own opening arrangements. Cobbles and some slopes mean that pushchair and wheelchair users should plan a suitable route with the tourist office.
By train, the useful station is Barvaux. The tourist office advertises a shuttle to the old town during certain periods; check its exact running dates and your return connection. A TEC service or pre-booked taxi may complete the journey depending on the day. Plan with SNCB and Durbuy's official mobility information.
