Tournai-style rabbit, at the heart of Lundi perdu

Prunes and raisins accompany the Lundi perdu rabbit. In Tournai, the dish gains meaning within a meal of roles, songs and reunions.

A dish within a table ritual

Tournai-style rabbit is linked with Lundi perdu, celebrated in Tournai on the Monday after Epiphany. The tourist office describes a living tradition of meals shared with family or friends. Its home is Tournai, in today's Tournai-Mouscron district. The dish is not understood only through sauce or garnish: it belongs to a gathering structuring the evening and giving everyone a place at the table.

The role of prunes and raisins

The official presentation combines rabbit with prunes, raisins and potatoes. It specifies traditional cooking in water. The Wallonie picarde tourist office repeats this distinction, unlike some modern versions using beer or wine. This article concerns the traditional preparation described by tourist offices, not an alcoholic recipe. It offers no cooking procedure: variations can be explored with the person preparing the dish.

The king, fool and slips of paper

The most revealing anecdote is not an ingredient secret. The tourist office describes drawing the king's slips: guests receive roles such as king, fool or pourer that enliven the meal. It also notes recognition of Lundi perdu as intangible heritage of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation in 2021. Old traces of the celebration do not prove today's rabbit recipe remained unchanged since the Middle Ages. A table custom and preparation can have different histories.

The taste of a festive meal

Meat, prunes, raisins and accompaniment create a dish associated as much with its diners as its preparation. Family customs produce differences without erasing the Lundi perdu connection. The table's story, roles and sequence give rabbit a place in Tournai's memory. Fruit sweetness contributes to that identity without guaranteeing identical balance in every kitchen.

A celebration does not guarantee daily availability

To discover it today, consult the tourist office and confirm opportunities directly with an artisan or meal organiser. This article is neither a restaurant list nor a promise of permanent service. Mention allergies and enquire about variants, particularly if avoiding alcohol. Tournai salad, served later in the menu, helps explain the whole meal. The cathedral panorama is a documentary city photograph assembled from 2005 views; it does not show the rabbit dish.
