Maitrank, May in a glass
White wine, sweet woodruff and orange: the Pays d'Arlon aperitif tells of maceration and spring gatherings.

A drink carrying spring in its name
Maitrank is one of Arlon's food-and-drink landmarks. Its name means May drink. The tourist office describes its base: white wine in which sweet woodruff macerates, with orange and other ingredients varying by recipe. This article is anchored in Arlon and its district; it does not mean every European woodruff drink is made in Arlon.
Older accounts trace flavoured wine through neighbouring regions. For a firmly identifiable local date, note the Confrérie du Maitrank's creation on 24 May 1964. It shows how convivial custom becomes collectively defended heritage. Family variations are no anomaly: the tourist office specifically recalls that everyone may have their own recipe. You can compare without claiming one glass sums up the whole town.
Maceration is not distillation
Preparation relies on contact between wine, plant and citrus, followed by filtering. This principle is distinct from distillation. For amounts and precautions, use a recipe from a competent source or choose an identifiable preparation; do not pick a plant solely because it resembles a photograph. Natural is neither a foraging instruction nor a guarantee of unlimited consumption.
Wine, orange and aromatic plant give the drink an identity beyond sweetness or freshness. Family variations explain why one tasting cannot represent all Pays d'Arlon preparations. A glass of water naturally belongs beside a small portion. Maitrank remains an alcoholic drink for adults; its inviting aroma changes neither that reality nor the need for moderation.
A living tradition, not a frozen setting
The tourist office presents a renewed Ambassadeurs label in 2026. It helps identify artisanal production or a tasting offer without making this article a ranking of establishments. Check official information before a visit rather than assuming a festival or fountain runs year-round. The area can also be discovered outside festive days.
To continue your discovery, keep the purchase label and follow maker transport and storage instructions. The photograph provides only a geographical reference: Saint-Donat Church in Arlon, April 2022. A view of Maitrank's Pays d'Arlon, not the drink. It does not replace an authorised image of the exact product. Its purpose is to locate the account without attributing work to an artisan not pictured.
Drink in moderation.
