Honey from Le Clos des Abeilles

In Terwagne, Jean-Marie Hoyoux's beekeeping connects flowers, bees and shared knowledge. A Condroz honey inviting us to understand the landscape as well as taste it.

A honey and a story of encounters

In Terwagne, in the municipality of Clavier and the Huy district, Le Clos des Abeilles gives Condroz beekeeping a human face. Jean-Marie Hoyoux tells Terres-de-Meuse Tourist Office that his passion began in 1978: someone close showed him a hive, then an agronomist introduced a beekeeper who entrusted him with two colonies. Not a legendary origin, but learning begun with curiosity. The beekeeper's account.

In the same interview, he recalls his spring honey winning a Coq de Cristal award in 2017. That distinction concerns that product and year, not a permanent ranking or promise for future harvests. The site's interest extends beyond awards: it is also designed to explain hive activity and a beekeeper's skills.

Reading a harvest rather than a label

Honey tells of a harvest season and the flowers encountered by bees. It therefore has no standardised aroma: texture, intensity and persistence vary between batches. Potting and storage also contribute. These nuances make artisanal production interesting without reducing every harvest to one promised flower.

Fairly neutral bread is a good starting point. Then try fresh cheese or a few walnuts: these are tasting suggestions, not certified producer recipes. They simply reveal what honey contributes to a plate beyond use in a hot drink alone.

Understanding the apiary

Local tourism also documents an educational approach: a demonstration hive, equipment presentation and discovery of hive products. Contact the site before any visit; reception conditions and suitable seasons cannot be inferred from a photograph. Opening a hive depends notably on programme and current conditions.

When buying, ask about available honey and storage. Do not confuse local honey with medical promises: our selection is gastronomic. The accompanying photo shows a honey jar educationally, not Le Clos des Abeilles packaging. The producer remains the best source for its current harvest.
