Mussels on 8 September, Ath's Ducasse ends at the table
In Ath, mussels accompany the Ducasse's conclusion: a maritime dish becoming a local gathering, without claiming an exclusively Ath recipe.

A festive dish at summer's end
Mussels are obviously not farmed in the Dendre. Their place in an Ath itinerary comes from a table custom, not invented agricultural origin. The Ducasse programme published by VisitAth mentions the 8 September mussels-and-chips meal and evening mussels served in cafés, restaurants and association premises. The dish thus accompanies the festivities' close. It offers another way into town beyond the already famous tarte à mastelles.
The calendar creates the local speciality
Official programmes for 2023 and 2024 also document this gathering. Repetition supports describing a living custom without arbitrarily assigning centuries to it. Ath's distinction is not inventing mussels and chips but placing the meal within a date and community. After giants and Ducasse gatherings, the table provides another way to extend shared celebration.
A pot and two textural pleasures
Mussels offer tender flesh and juices made more expressive by aromatics. Freshly cooked chips contribute a different, dry and crisp texture. Marinière is a familiar option, but establishments may offer others. The custom's name fixes neither one sauce nor compulsory seasoning. These plates are linked by convivial timing rather than a protected recipe or a strictly local ingredient.
A meal meant to be shared
The tradition's charm also lies in its rhythm. The pot is opened, shells accumulate and the meal proceeds differently from a dish cut up beforehand. Preparing aromatics, cooking and serving nevertheless require care appropriate to seafood. At home, a precise recipe and supplier instructions matter more than a folklore account. This article describes local practice; it does not replace shellfish safety or storage information.
Finding the custom without freezing the programme
Venues, arrangements and serving dates change between editions. Cited programmes witness tradition rather than announce a future Ducasse. For a coming visit, the tourist office calendar is the right starting point. Mussels are molluscs, which matters for allergies.
