Tour Burbant, the keep that witnessed Ath's beginnings

A twelfth-century keep, four-metre-thick walls and a fascinating way to understand the town: visits by reservation.

The fortified heart of a new town

The Tour Burbant takes Ath back to its military origins. In 1166, Baldwin IV, Count of Hainaut, began building this keep to defend his territory's northern border and assert his authority over neighbouring lords. The Anglo-Norman-style structure became the centre of the medieval castle, surrounded by service buildings, an upper bailey and a protected lower bailey. Its silhouette therefore tells more than the story of a siege or battle: it explains how power established itself and how a town organised itself around it.

Four metres of stone, then another life

The keep is almost twenty metres high and fourteen metres wide; some walls reach four metres in thickness. Try to picture that mass from the courtyard before entering. Yet its history did not stop in the Middle Ages. The regional heritage service recalls that the tower was used as an arsenal, then as a warehouse during the Dutch period, before restoration around the turn of the twentieth century. This change of function is an appealing story: a fortress can survive because new uses are found for its solid walls.

Arrange your visit before setting off

The Tour Burbant is visited by reservation: its location in central Ath does not mean the keep is always open. Consult Visit Ath, the official source for Tour Burbant, then confirm the time slot, group conditions and accessible areas. Explain any mobility requirements before booking a visit to this old building. Ath SNCB station is the nearby station. The official map helps you walk to the centre and rue du Gouvernement. Allow some margin between your train's arrival and the appointment. Combining the tower with the Maison des Géants brings the town's stone heritage into conversation with its living traditions.
