Wéris, a walk among giant stones
Dolmens, standing stones and the Maison des Mégalithes open a window onto the region's first farmers.

Five millennia within sight
In Wéris, in the municipality of Durbuy, dolmens and standing stones turn a walk into a journey towards the region's first farming communities. These monuments date back around five thousand years. They recall communities able to organise the transport and assembly of imposing blocks while setting their dead and their practices within the landscape. The stones' silence makes you want to understand the work behind their apparent simplicity.
The Maison des Mégalithes is a good starting point. Its museum, renovated in 2026, explains the monuments and their builders, while the reception offers material for exploring the village and walking routes. Beginning with this context helps distinguish a dolmen, associated with a funerary structure, from a standing stone. What follows becomes clearer when each silhouette already has a few reference points.
When stones become legends
The rocks around Wéris have also inspired tales of giants, fairies and the Devil. The Maison des Mégalithes presents traditions associated with the Pierre Haina, the Lit du Diable and the Pas-Bayard, among others. These stories belong to folklore: they do not scientifically date the monuments. Discovering them alongside archaeology shows how the same landscape can inspire different ways of telling stories.
A museum, then a walk of your choice
Consult the official Maison des Mégalithes website for museum opening times, guided tours and maps. The outdoor site is best explored on foot. Choose a loop suited to the weather and your group; the different monuments do not form a single compact enclosure. Ask about accessibility, which varies between the visitor reception and the terrain.
By train, travel to Barvaux, then plan the final journey to Wéris with a pre-booked taxi or a cycling route prepared to suit your ability. The village has no station. Consult SNCB information and arrange the return before setting off on the walk. Bring suitable shoes, water and a map for a proper countryside outing.
